Nathula Pass (Nathu La) in Gangtok, Sikkim

Even after his physical death, Baba Harbhajan Singh is always present to keep the nation safe and secure. This is why he is also famously referred to as the ‘Hero of Nathula’. Nathula Pass is located in Sikkim’s route to Tibet where the temperature is always extremely cold with snow. Its height is above 14,000 ft (4,200 mtr). The temperatures here range from -20C to 17C. It is one of the coldest travel destinations in India.

    Stories About Baba Harbhajan Singh

One of the stories about Baba Harbhajan Singh talks about how his presence chides soldiers when they are not fulfilling their duties with full heart and armor. This one time, two soldiers dozed off because of the cold on the border and were harshly woken up by slaps on their cheeks by another soldier who happened to be none other than the soul of Baba Harbhajan Singh. He reprimanded the soldiers for sleeping while they were on duty.

Another story talks about how Baba Harbhajan Singh was labeled as a ‘fugitive’ when his dead body could not be found. Two days after his death, Baba Harbhajan Singh came into another soldier’s dream and told him about the exact location of his dead body. When the soldier went to that place, to his surprise, he found Baba Harbhajan Singh’s body, and then he was labeled as a martyr. In the dream, he explained to the other soldier that he lost his life while traversing a narrow canal. The flow of water cascaded him and he lost control, which led him to drown in the river.

Yet another story details Baba Harbhajan Singh’s presence on a horse ready to fight against any intrusion from Chinese soldiers. Soldiers posted on the Nathula Pass often see Baba Harbhajan Singh in their dreams, especially right before something unfortunate is about to happen to them during their duty, including information about Chinese intrusions. The story of Baba Harbhajan Singh and the presence of Baba Harbhajan Singh’s soul keep the soldiers motivated and enthusiastic about protecting their motherland despite the harsh weather conditions of the region.

One of the most celebrated stories is when Baba Harbhajan Singh came in the dream of his senior official and warned him that soon he was going to receive a letter from the Chinese army complaining about him. To everyone’s surprise, the senior official received a letter complaining about an Indian soldier on a white horse riding too close to Chinese borders.

    Baba Harbhajan Singh’s Temple

In September 1967, Baba Harbhajan Singh was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra for his martyrdom. Baba Harbhajan Singh’s Memorial Temple is located at an altitude of 13,123 feet and lies between Nathula Pass and Jelepla Pass. Baba Harbhajan Singh’s bunker was turned into a memorial temple. All rules that apply to Indian soldiers are applied to Baba Harbhajan Singh too, including his pay, his breakfast, and his dinner. It is believed that creases come on his bed as if a real person slept there, and his shoes got dirty from the mud even after they were polished and cleaned the day before - as if Baba Harbhajan Singh went out for surveillance.  The temple is closed at night since that is the time when Baba Harbhajan Singh used to go out for his duty and it is believed that Baba Harbhajan Singh still follows this schedule.

How and When to Visit Baba Harbhajan Singh’s Memorial Temple

Baba Harbhajan Singh’s Memorial Temple is closed during winter since the entire Nathula Pass is blocked because of heavy snowfall. There is no fee to visit the temple. The best time to visit Baba Harbhajan Singh’s Memorial Temple is from April to November.
