    Types of Holi in India

    People celebrate this festival by bonfire and apply color on each other’s faces to show their love and togetherness. It is a 2-day celebration, full of entertainment and various other activities like dancing, singing, and consuming different sweets and beverages.

    Holi is being played by an inspiring mythological story. According to the history of Holi, lord Vishnu saved his believer Prahlad from his evil father Hiranya Kashyap, and Aunt Holika. There is also another story based on the love of Radha and lord Krishna.

    Different types of Holi in India

    India is a land of variation; it is great to know how people celebrate Holi differently across the country. Some famous types of Holi are Lathmar Holi, Dol Jatra, Phaguwa, Rang Panchmi/Shigmo, Yaosang, Baithaki/Khadi, Manjal Kuli/Ukuli, Basant Utsav and Dola. It is obvious to get confused by so many types of Holi celebrations in India. So, let’s take a quick look at different types of Holi.

    1. Lathmar Holi

    Lathmar Holi is one of the unique and famous ways to celebrate Holi in Uttar Pradesh. Lathmar Holi of Banaras is celebrated in the native of lord Krishna. Vrindavan, Mathura, Nandgoan, and Barsana come together to celebrate Holi with Lathis (Sticks) and colors made up of Palash flowers. As per tradition, men try to play Holi with women, in reciprocation, women beat men with sticks to save themselves from getting colored.

    1. Dola

    Dola Holi is celebrated in Odisha. Dola Holi celebration from last 5-7 days. This festival starts on Falgun Dashami when people go for the religious gathering of their lord Krishna and offer them bhog and color powder. This religious gathering continues for the next few days and ends on Falgun Purnima.

    1. Phagunwa

    Phagunwa is celebrated in Bihar. Phagunwa Holi is celebrated with folk songs, thandai and gujiyas, and never-ending fun with family and friends. 

    1. Basant Utsav

    Basant Utsav is celebrated in West Bengal. People welcome the spring season with open arms. They wear yellow color during Basant Utsav and play Holi with colored powder. Also, Dola is an important part of the Holi celebration in West Bengal. Religious gathering is done on the main day where people play colors with colored powder.

    1. Shigmo

    Shigmo Holi is celebrated in Goa. This is the major festival of farmers as they welcome spring. This festival is celebrated for 14 days. This is a traditional festival of Goa. This is different from other local carnivals of Goa.

    1. Baithaki or Khadi Holi

    Baithaki or khadi Holi is celebrated in Uttarakhand, people gather in their traditional costumes, sing traditional songs, and roam in the city. People wish each other by marking colors on their faces. Holi is a festival of colors and games in Uttarakhand.

    1. Rang Panchami

    Rang Panchami is celebrated in Maharashtra. The celebration starts with firewood known as Holika Dahan. The next day people play with dry and wet colors with beats of music.

    1. Manjal kuli or ukuli

    Manjal kuli or ukuli is celebrated in Kerala. The Kumba and Konkani communities of Kerala have their different way of celebrating Holi. Turmeric is mainly used as a color to play Holi.

    1. Pakuwah

    Pakuwah is celebrated in Assam. It is quite similar to the dol jatra and you will find many similar features in the celebration alike West Bengal. Pakuwah is celebrated for 2 days. In 1st day people burn clay huts to celebrate the victory of good and in 2nd day people celebrate it with colors.

    1. Hola Mohalla

    Hola Mohalla is celebrated by Nihang Sikhs in Punjab. This is a very different and out-of-the-box celebration of Holi. A day before Holi people show marital arts, sing and dance.
