33 crore or 33 Koti: Number of Gods and Goddesses in Hinduism

It is believed that Hinduism has 33 crore gods. Yes, Hindus are not believers, they are idol worshippers in every detailed way. And this can be true that they have 33 crore gods in all? This could not be just a consequence of a verbal delusion. Hindus refer to 33 “Koti” Devtas but the word “Koti” stands for both type and crores. So, what do they refer to as 33 crore gods or 33 types of gods?

There is a theory that says that there are 33 types of gods while there is no trace of 33 crore gods. These 33 types of gods are 12 Aditya (Anshuman, Aryaman, Indra, Twashta, Dhatu, Parjanya, Pusha, Bhag, Mitra, Varuna, Vivaswana, Vishnu), 8 Vasu (Aap, Dhruva, Soma, Dhar, Anil, Anal, Pratyusha, Prabhasa) and 11 Rudra (Shambhu, Pinaki, Girish, Sthanu, Bharga, Bhava, Sadashiva, Shiva, Hara, Sharva, Kapali). In these 31 gods, Indra and Prajapati are two important gods. Prajapati is Brahma, the superior god, and Indra is also the first devta among all.

In contrast to this theory, the Hindu saint scholar Shri Bhagavat Anand Guru, says that there are 33 crore gods in Hinduism not 33 types of gods. He also saying that if “Koti” is a type then there cannot be even 33 types of gods. If Aditya is a type, then all the 12 Aditya gods come in one category not in 12 different categories. But how 3 types of gods can amount to 31 if we go by the “type” logic?

In his second argument he says that it is an inaccurate assumption to say that the word “Koti” here means types, not crores. Devta is a “Yoni” like manushya is a yoni. In Manushya Yoni, there are various sub-categories like Indian, American, Russian, Chinese, and all. Same with devtas, as they cannot reduced to just 33 types. There are also various sub-gods Yakshas as Manibhadra, Gandharvas as Chitrarath, Tumburu, Apsaras as Urvashi, Rambha, Pitras as Aryama, Saptarshis as Vashishtha, Prajapatis as Dakshas and Kashyapa, Nagas as Vasuki and so on. Shukla Yajurveda and Atharva Veda, natural bodies like Agni and Vayu are also gods. None of these are part of the above-mentioned types and categories and yet they are worshipped like gods.

In Shri Bhagavat Anand Guru, another argument he says that there are 5 main categories of Bhagwati Durga and in each category, there are 64 yoginis and 52 Bhairavs. There are also various other yoginis, apsaras, and yakshinis. There are 49 kinds of margins and 56 kinds of Visva devas. Shiva is also Rudra and there are various sub-avatars of his including Hanuman.

In Hindu mythology, Sati is Parvati and also Durga. There are 9 Durga, 10 Maha Vidhya, and Vishnu has 24 avatars. Brahma is also known as Prajapati. In above mentioned 33 gods, even Ganesha, Kartikeya, Veerbhadra, Agni, Vayu, Kubera, Yama, etc. important gods are left out. In Vedas, thousands of gods' names are mentioned. Valakhilya gods alone are 60000. There are Garuda and Nandi. Even Ganesha has various Vinayaka and Vakratunda forms. It just goes on. There are 33 crore gods of Hindus, there should be no doubt about it.
