Raksha Bandhan 2024: Significance
Raksha Bandhan means the protection in Sanskrit. Although the festival is related to various rituals in different regions of India, all of them include tying of thread. Sisters tie Rakhi on her brother’s wrist, praying for their good health and prosperous life, and in return, brothers promise to protect her. After the sisters tie the Rakhi, the brothers give gifts to their sisters.
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated since ancient times. Earliest references to Rakhi will be found in stories in many Hindu scriptures which highlight the rich cultural importance.
According to Indian mythology, we see how in Mahabharat, Krishna and Draupadi, were good friends. It is believed that Draupadi tore a piece of her sari to bandage Krishna’s injury. After this, he promised to repay her kindness. He provided her with clothes and protected her while she was being disrobed by Kauravas.
It is also believed that she tied Rakhi to Krishna before he left for the war. Also, the mother of Pandavas, Kunti, tied a Rakhi to her grandson Abhimanyu before he went to battle, as a sign of blessings and protection.
