Cycle of Life: What is Karma?

You might have thought about what karma is and how karma affects our lives. karma is a concept that “what goes around comes around”. According to Hindu karma is a relationship between a person’s mental or physical action and the results following that action.

It also signifies the consequences of all actions of an individual in their current and past lives and the chain of cause and effect in morality.

In Buddhism, karma means the principle of cause and effect. The result of an action can be verbal, mental, or physical.

    Working and science of karma

Karma promotes intentional action. For instance, whenever you give a hand to a person in need, the action impresses your mind as you build up several imprints as you grow through experiences; this helps open up chances of someone extending a hand to help you in situations where you require assistance. On the other hand, a frame of negative actions leads to undesirable outcomes — you will not be assisted when you need some, but rather, you will be hurt.

It can be noted that if one’s intention is pure, happiness is usually the consequence. When you undertake a certain activity with either bad intentions or bad thinking, you are setting yourself up for certain issues to occur.

To deal with such events people are often guided by the principle of karma. Well, even if people do not believe in ‘karmic justice’ or fate, still, they may still expect that doing good would result in the good, respectively.

Nevertheless, there is a problem with such conviction of the mind’s potential. Some people are sacrifice givers who believe that they are going to do well in life with good deeds and sacrifices. Thus, many of these givers also fail because they misjudge themselves in setting such limits for helping others. It may cause them to give up and fail to pursue their dreams and achievements to assist others in need – they will be left behind in life.

    Types of Karma

Karma can therefore reflect the actions of a singular entity or a society. For instance, one can create individual karma through the use of words in their thoughts, actions, or even both. People do not have karma individually for different actions; however, when several individuals combine forces, for instance, soldiers use firearms or a group of devotees pray or chant, they manifest collective karma.

    1. Good Karma vs. Bad Karma

According to the above classifications, karma can be divided into good karma and bad karma. Through good karma a person accumulates good points to take in their next born and for bad karma it is a reward one gets by harming others intentionally.

In some ways, things done that result in suffering in the long run are considered evil and vice versa. If your actions result in creating happiness, it means that your actions are properly constructive, positively warranted, and even virtuous. Although it is difficult to distinguish between actions that can be considered as being fundamentally good or bad, it is as easy to do so regarding the effects.

    1. Sanchita Karma vs. Prarabdha Karma

Karma has four dimensions. Out of them, Sanchita and Prarabdha are easily identifiable and well-known.

The doctrine of sanchita karma is the storehouse of karma which is linked with evolution. This means that the type of karma that comes from the universe being a storehouse of knowledge or Sanchita Karma can be seen by closing eyes and becoming aware. Much knowledge about creation and development may be learned from single-celled animals and inanimate substances through this warehouse.

Prarabdha karma is the karma that you have earned for this very birth you are in right now. Much of this information is only what is within your capability to process. The share of karma memories, or impressions of the past existences is also in you as soon as you take upon yourself all your past and – consequently, present – karma, you will die; you will be unable to withstand this load. As it is, several are already living in remembrance of memory, just in their existence. This is whereby prarabdha karma plays a pivotal role in the whole concept.

    Karma Principles

According to the karma concept, there exist four main principles.

Karma is nontransferable. In other words, you are the one who actively commits karma and pays for it. Each person has to confront his or her karma on one’s own and no one else can do it for him or her and the same applies to the process of suffering.

Noncommitted actions will not take you to the extent that you would desire. Intentions without follow-up actions are fruitless and doing a radical action halfheartedly will not yield the intended result.

Karma is linked with intentions, so mistakes and chance occurrences affect Karma’s positive and negative justice and repercussions. Some people may find it ridiculous to believe in karma, but those who subscribe to it will always stand to gain all-round friendship and happiness. This is so because, for the most part, we have people who believe in the ‘fuel and energy theory’ for karma and would thus do good to gain something good.
